Nandi hills- proof that heaven exists!

As weekend approaches, there’s a new rush of energy that builds up to celebrate the end of work week. It was Friday and we had been to Chikkaballapur(work trip). We finished our work by noon and were planning to go back to Bangalore and that is when our friend suggested some sightseeing. Nandi hills which still continues to be an ideal holiday retreat for tourists sounded to be a perfect idea.

How to reach

It is approximately around 61 kms from Bangalore. There is a daily bus service from Bangalore that goes by the name of Anand Travels. The nearest railway station is in Chikkaballapur, which is approximately at a distance of 19 km. But it must be known that the journey to Nandi Hills is best enjoyed by an early morning drive while one can experience the sunrise from the top of the hill. Since we all went with our bikes we were sure it was gonna be the ride of our lives.

At the base of nandi hills there are many stays and 24/7 cafes. So one can enjoy the night at the soothing ambience of the café and then start the earliest to the climb. We spent most of our night at Dr. Shreesha cafe which was very good with tasty food.
We started at early 4:45 and the roads were blocked with traffic already. We had 2 wheelers so we could move through the jam packed traffic and somehow reach the entrance gate. The mist filled roads and the vehicles going in complete pitch black curves was truly amazing ride.

Places to see

Tipu’s drop – This vantage point of the Nandi Hills which today provides the most iconic view of the surroundings has a dark historical past. During the time of Tipu Sultan’s reign, as a punishment, the prisoners were thrown down from this cliff to death.

Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple– Also known as Nandi Temple, this place which dates back to the 9th century is one of the oldest temples in Karnataka. Its beautiful complex set up at the base of the hills boasts a spellbinding architecture, which makes a visit to this place worth a dime and your time.

Tipu’s Summer Residence – An ideal piece of architecture, this grand palace on a hilltop is where Tippu Sultan used to spend his summers away from the scorching heat. It is a must visit place for all history buffs.

Amrita Sarovar– Known as the ‘The Lake of Nectar’, the lake is formed by perennial springs. It is the main source of water in the nearby area. Come to the lake at night to enjoy the view of sparkling water in the moon light.

The views

The views are breathtaking from almost sides of the hilltop. While there’s a specific viewpoint to enjoy the sunrise, we found a space to witness the sunrise. And then there it was. what’s special about Nandi hills is that often the clouds cover the hilltop giving it a very foggy appearance. Sometimes, the clouds are even below you when you have reached the summit of the hill. Nandi hills is the coldest point in Bangalore & I Suggest you to take a light jacket to brace yourself from the chilling breeze.

After capturing nice view, we went to the restaurant for breakfast. Sipping my coffee and watching the clouds move around the hill was a spectacular feeling.

Time to return

We checked out at 11:30 am and started our journey back to Bangalore. Beauty of nature and that serenity is always a therapy for a hectic week. Coming back all my thought said was-
wow! I just witnessed heaven!

Best time to visit

The pleasant climate of the hills invites tourists all year round. You will find the maximum crowd on weekends. And, no matter what time of the year you come here, some experiences should not be missed- sunrise, panoramic view of the surroundings from the hilltop and after shower view.
